MPS American Sign Language Classes
The following classes are currently offered at Mercyhurst Prep.
INTRODUCTION TO SIGN LANGUAGE - #535 This course will introduce students to a basic understanding Pidgin Sign English (PSE), a derivative of American Sign Language (ASL), the natural language of the deaf. Students will be taught the Sign Language Alphabet, rudimentary vocabulary, and the "grammar" of Pidgin Sign English in the context of sign language conversation. In addition, this course is designed to deepen student understanding of deaf culture including both the richness and problems associated with deafness in a predominantly hearing world. Students will be required to research deaf culture as well as interact with and interview deaf individuals to facilitate this understanding. Finally, as student learning progresses, students will be introduced to American Sign Language as part of the sign language curriculum.
BEGINNER SIGN LANGUAGE II - #536 Prerequisite: A grade of B in Beginner Sign Language or the approval of the instructor This course is designed for the serious student who already has a rudimentary understanding of basic sign language. The course will concentrate on building student vocabulary in a topical way and continuing exposure to various elements of deaf culture. Students will be given a variety of sign language projects to help enhance their skill including an interactive sign language videotape mystery game; sign language practice and interaction on the computer (CD-ROM); community interaction; more sophisticated song signing.
An American Sign Language III is in the works now because of student request and, after that, who knows?
