MPS Sign Language Club
'Talking Hands'

This club was formed for the 1996-1997 school year. It has done very well in its first year and hopefully will continue with its success. This club was formed because students were so interested in sign language and wanted to do more with what they had learned.

Purpose

To learn more sign language
To get involved in the deaf community
To present opportunities for interaction between the deaf and hearing communities
To educate others
To have FUN!!

The club meets every Wednesday from three to four o'clock. The time is used to learn sign, plan activities, and practice our signed songs.

As our first big activity, the club held a Christmas party for Deaf children. We signed Christmas carols, played games, made ornaments, and had a great time.

In the future, the club is planning to do an activity day and start up a religious education program for area Deaf children.

The club is very involved in school activities. The members sign songs frequently at school masses and assemblies. At Mercyhurst Prep's Open House, we presented a club table and a song signing.
